About Us

St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church was founded in 1925 and built brick by brick by Ukrainian immigrants. Our early members were dedicated to preserving their culture and faith, while also embracing the opportunities offered by their new homeland. On October 3, 1926, our church building was one of the first in America to be consecrated by Archbishop John Theodorovich under the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

In 2000, St. Michael’s merged with St. George’s parish of Southeast Minneapolis, forming St. Michael’s and St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. We belong to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. That year we also formed a sister-church relationship with a parish in Bucha, Ukraine.

Today, St. Michael’s and St. George’s is a thriving parish, where the traditions of the Ukrainian Orthodox Faith are alive and well. Although much has changed over the past century, our commitment to worship according to our traditions; to financially and morally support Ukrainians in times of need; and to share our culture with the wider Twin Cities have remained constant. Recently, our church has once again been called to help the Ukrainian people. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, we have worked constructively with other Ukrainian churches and organizations to raise funds for Ukraine and our sister Parish in Bucha, and reach a friendly, Christian hand to help new refugees here in Minnesota.
